- In your article on the medical uses of lasers (TECHNOLOGY,
- Sept. 18), you perpetuate the misconception that cataract
- surgery is done with a laser. Primary cataract removal is still
- performed in a traditional surgical manner. It is true that the
- neodymium-YAG laser you describe may be used to create an
- opening in the posterior capsule remaining in the eye after the
- cataract extraction has been performed, but the idea that the
- cataract itself can be eliminated as you imply by "zapping" with
- a laser is incorrect.
